Controversies, contradiction, and “participation” in AI - Mona Sloane, 2024

From November 2023 workshop

The group sketched out a four-step framework for thinking about the design of deliberation on AI, providing a common structure that can be adapted for different kinds of AI, and different settings where AI is being deployed.

  1. Identify the decision or focus of discussion and find a frame that leads with the context over the technology
    1. Generative AI
    2. Facial recognition
    3. Automated decision making
    4. AI impacts on society
    5. Recommender systems
  2. Identify the affected communities, who to involve and how to invite
  3. Design an appropriate learning phase
  4. Design the deliberation process and outputs

Draft notes to support development of this framework developed by the group are given below.

Step 1: Identifying the focus and frame

Effective public engagement should start from society, substantive issues, and everyday life.
